It was the final days of our postgraduate journey at KIMS, Hubballi, in February 2020, when the looming fear of COVID-19 began to grow. News broke that the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in North Karnataka, a returnee from Australia, had been detected at SDM. With the inevitability of a surge in cases, we knew our lives were about to change forever.
At the time, COVID-19 was a complete mystery—there was little to no information about the virus. Questions about its impact on India, the use of PPE, and how to treat the illness loomed large, leaving us feeling like blank pages, unprepared for what was to come. Soon, a call from the Government of Karnataka (GoK) informed us that the patient would be shifted to KIMS, Hubballi. My colleagues, Dr. Zahura HD, Dr. Kiran Revankar, and I were handpicked by our HOD, Dr. Ishwar Hasabi, to lead the response along with senior doctors.
Each of us faced personal challenges—Zahura, a new mother with a breastfeeding baby; Kiran, an asthmatic on inhalers; and I, an only child to my parents. Despite our fears, we chose to stay silent about our assignment, hiding it from our families to spare them worry. Dr. Hasabi, our pillar of strength, guided us like a father and teacher, supporting us through every step.

Preparing for the First Case
I was tasked with readying the COVID-19 ward in the newly inaugurated PMSSY block. Converting a government setup into a functioning COVID ward during such uncertain times was no small feat. Arrangements were made swiftly, and soon, the patient arrived. Alongside two brave nursing students, I took the first duty shift. Dr. Kiran handled the overnight shift, and Dr. Zahura followed the next day.
Our patient was healthy with no comorbidities and recovered like it was a simple flu. However, the process of managing his case was far from simple. We tracked his journey meticulously—from his flight details to auto-rickshaw rides—updating the government at every step.
The Surge Begins
By the time he was discharged, four new cases had emerged. Within days, the number of cases surged, and the nationwide lockdown began. Those early days were a whirlwind of uncertainty, hard work, and determination. Looking back, those moments not only defined our careers but also solidified our resolve to serve humanity in the face of unprecedented challenges.
While the first case at KIMS, Hubballi recovered smoothly, it was just the beginning of our battle against COVID-19—a battle that taught us resilience, courage, and the power of teamwork.
The journey through those early days of COVID-19 at KIMS, Hubballi, was an extraordinary test of resilience, courage, and teamwork. From preparing the COVID-19 ward to treating the first case in North Karnataka, and managing the surge that followed, every challenge taught us invaluable lessons about dedication and the spirit of service. The support from our mentors and colleagues was instrumental in navigating the unknown, and the experience continues to inspire us as healthcare professionals.
